Real Talk About Real Change for Achieving Racial Equity: Practical Tools for Centering Racial Equity at Your Organization

During this interactive workshop, Kris Hermanns and Mary Morten will talk about their work in the Pacific Northwest. In doing so, they will use the Pride Foundation case study to look at how they are working to advance racial equity within their organizations and work as a springboard for participants to talk with one another about their own process, progress, and challenges.

To make real change in philanthropy and in our nonprofits, we are going to have to get comfortable talking to one another—sharing our experiences, our successes, and certainly our challenges. As a sector, we have seen positive shifts toward elevating and prioritizing racial equity, but there is still a lot to be done.

Come with your questions and ideas for your own journey, and use our exercises, resources, and learnings from one another to develop practical next steps. Kris Hermanns has been working for more than 25 years as a nonprofit executive, strategist, grantmaker, and fundraiser. Currently, Kris is serving as a Special Advisor to Pride Foundation, following her seven-year tenure as the Chief Executive Officer. As CEO and now as an adviso, this work enables her to bridge two of her passions — advocating for equity and justice, and the field of philanthropy. As the CEO of Pride Foundation, Kris mobilized individual and institutional resources to affect real change in the lives of people and communities who are most impacted by injustices, including through centering and embedding racial equity into the foundation’s mission, programs, and practices. Previous positions include Deputy Director at NCLR and a Program Officer at The Rhode Island Foundation.

Mary Morten is the President of Morten Group (MG), a national consulting firm established in November 2001 to focus on clients in the nonprofit, for-profit, and foundation fields. Morten Group provides a customized approach to solving organizational development challenges, and explores new opportunities with a specific focus on a racial equity initiative program. This includes assessments and trainings, succession planning, and talent investment strategies. Previous positions include: Director of the Office of Violence Prevention for the Chicago Department of Public Health, mayoral appointee for Mayor Richard M. Daley, and Director in the Commission on Human Relations. Mary is the first African American woman to serve as Board Chair for the Chicago Foundation for Women where she also served as a consultant, Associate Director, and Interim Executive Director.

Mary holds a B.A. in Communications with an emphasis in Radio and Television from Loyola University Chicago and is a member of Forefront, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and the Association of Consultants to Nonprofits. Mary serves on the faculty for Executive Director Boot Camp at the Axelson Center for Nonprofit Management at North Park University. She is also Co-founder and current Board Chair for the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance.
